24-Hour Economic Blackout

By Elder Dana C. Edmond

As Executive Director of the Office for Regional Conference Ministries, usually the type of statement that you see below is sent by my office on behalf of the 9 Regional Conference and our office in Huntsville.

This time, this was not time to call everyone together and hash out a statement- so this time, I am speaking only for my office.

I believe in diversity. I started off 47 years ago as a young Pastor in the Caribbean, in a completely different culture than my own. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

Our office is diverse. Of the 15 people who work here, 6 of them were born outside of the United States. We have 6 countries represented in our office, 2 of the 4 officers are female.

I think diversity is a good thing. That is why our family will be making no purchases tomorrow.

24-Hour Economic Blackout Plan.

This is the first step in a collective effort.

THE PLAN

A 24-hour economic blackout has been scheduled as an initial action to demonstrate the impact of consumer choices.

WHEN

Friday, February 28th
12:00 AM – 11:59 PM

WHAT TO AVOID

For one full day:

Do not make any purchases.

Do not shop online or in-store.

Avoid large retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy.

Do not spend money at fast-food restaurants.

Minimize gas purchases.

Avoid using credit or debit cards for non-essential spending.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Only purchase essentials if absolutely necessary (e.g., food, medicine, emergency supplies)

If you must spend, consider supporting local businesses.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Discuss it and spread awareness.

Document your participation on the day.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Consumer spending influences businesses and financial institutions.

A temporary economic pause can highlight collective purchasing power.

If necessary, future actions may extend the blackout period.
